We are currently seeking a highly skilled and passionate Senior Design Sustainability Lead to join our dynamic team in Chorleywood. In this pivotal role, you will work closely with our clients and their sister company to deliver expert environmental advice and support across various stages of our projects.


Role Overview:

As the Senior Design Sustainability Lead, you will collaborate directly with clients to understand and integrate their sustainability aspirations into our design processes. Your expertise will be critical from RIBA stages 2-4, ensuring that projects meet high environmental standards. You will also support tender preparation and review newly awarded projects in preparation for handover to the construction team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with clients to understand their sustainability goals for new builds.
  • Conduct stakeholder meetings to gather specific sustainability requirements.
  • Translate client aspirations into actionable design objectives.
  • Develop comprehensive sustainability strategies tailored to each project.
  • Establish clear sustainability targets and metrics for environmental, social, and economic impacts.
  • Stay updated on relevant sustainability regulations, building codes, and planning requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and planning requirements related to sustainability.
  • Work closely with architects, engineers, and other team members to integrate sustainable design principles.
  • Recommend sustainable materials, technologies, and construction methods.
  • Oversee supply chain parties conducting sustainability assessments and simulations.
  • Identify and assess sustainability-related risks and opportunities.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and present sustainability reports, proposals, and documentation to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.


About You:

You have an excellent knowledge of sustainable building design, including embodied and operational carbon and energy reduction in both new builds and refurbishment projects. With a strong background in construction or design, you are experienced in managing deliverables, programmes, and costs for various sustainability project requirements (such as BREEAM, emissions reduction, and environmental surveys). You excel in building lasting client relationships and motivating project teams towards achieving sustainable, realistic outcomes.


Requirements:


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Essential:
  • Degree or equivalent in an environmental, social, or governance discipline.
  • BREEAM Accredited Professional.
  • 5+ years of experience in environmental and sustainability support to construction.
  • Demonstrable experience in supporting construction design processes.
  • Experience in preparing briefs and proposals for clients and stakeholders.
  • Experience delivering design advice supporting low emission, BREEAM, and social value benefits.
  • Desirable:
  • Qualification in emissions reduction and/or lifecycle assessment.
  • CSCS card relevant to the role.
  • Experience in conducting environmental and social assessments and driving performance improvements.
  • Membership (any status) of a professional body linked to ESG or environment such as IEMA or IES.
  • Full or chartered membership of a professional ESG or environmental body.

Core Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with construction management software.
  • Proficiency in sustainability assessment and/or data reporting tools.
  • Strong financial skills, including budget preparation and supply chain cost management.
  • Clear and effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
