TheDatabase Engineer (CDW)role : The role of the CDW Database Engineer is central to the delivery of a Program of specific projects within the Data & Analytics Team. A key activity will be the management and optimisation of the CDW database(s) and the associated processes (backup, recovery,archive, performance optimisation, feed monitoring, etc).

In this role you will work with feeds from multiple systems (some cloud based others within on-prem Crick facilities) with different sizes, timing schedules and priorities.You will be collaborating with a community of others (clients of CDW) who are expertsin their own data sources. This role will be liaising with them on optimisation work you lead on and also coordinating change to CDW and its feeds (using the internal Crick change process - CAB).One key project will be the reengineering of the “integrationlayer” and older feeds to strengthen the CDW platform.

Responsibilities of ourDatabase Engineer (CDW) :

  • Ensure the successful delivery of data flows from a wide suite of systems into a data world.
  • Optimise the flows and the performance of the resulting tables to queries run by CDW users.
  • Implement a change plan to strengthen CDW and to build the “integration layer” of curated Crick data tables (architecture and design lead and delivered by others).
  • Manage the CDW database(s) - scaling and configuring to meet the needs following decisions made. Carry out any upgrade and maintenance of systems.
  • Monitor logging and tracking data problems with others to resolution. Test and reconcile data between source transactional/operational systems and data warehouse.
  • Assist in the Management of SSIS/Powershell projects and related packages.
  • Support the migration of specialist prototype data solutions into production quality services for the Crick.
  • Collaborate across a small community of expert system-leads on the design, develop and deployment of ETL/ELT solutions with SSIS (and other similar technologies).
  • Contribute to the development of the long-term Management Information strategy.

Experience we are looking for in ourDatabase Engineer (CDW) :

  • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science (or similar), Bioinformatics or other science discipline, or relevant experience.
  • Demonstrable previous experience of the administration (production/development) of databases (Cloud solutions being one)
  • Strong Experience of SQL.
  • Knowledge of database design, development and management (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of monitoring database efficiency and performance (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of DBMS backup and recovery methodologies.
  • Experience of version control software (Github, SVN) using git methodology to inform a properly documented and approved release cycle for the code.
  • Experience with Linux, Windows and shell scripting.
  • Competent in one of the following programming technologies/languages: SSIS / Powershell, or Python / Java etc.
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Be highly motivated, a self-starter and goal-oriented
  • Be able to demonstrate attention to detail
  • Be comfortable to work both on their own and as a part of a team
