The University of Sussex is seeking to appoint a Head of Asset and Space Management to play a crucial role in ensuring that the University utilises its estate to the fullest potential.

The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution. The first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in 1961, Sussex is a successful, growing University. The University has a beautiful and diverse estate located in Falmer, to the North of Brighton and Hove. It is situated in the South Downs National Park and has amongst its buildings a listed core heritage estate designed by Sir Basil Spence.

Over the past two decades, Sussex has doubled in size in terms of activity, with the University accommodating this growth within its existing constrained campus. The University has invested significantly across its estate, delivering new academic and student accommodation facilities, social and hospitality space and upgrading critical infrastructure for 5G connectivity. We are now entering a new phase of Masterplanning and crucial to this is to have in-depth knowledge of the current estate usage and condition.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Estates, the Head of Asset and Space Management will lead on transforming our approach towards strategic estate and asset management, ensuring that we extract maximum value from our assets. The role will lead on the development of a robust estate management plan that results in a proactive approach to estate condition and functionality, space optimisation, infrastructure, compliance and environmental sustainability.

We are seeking an individual that has developed experience in strategic estate and asset planning in a relevant setting, either as a consultant to estate owner/occupiers or in a client-side role. This position will suit an individual with excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills, who is comfortable setting standards and policy with senior stakeholders and team members. The appointed candidate will have a focus on outcomes which represent success for the University and its estates users.

The University offers a compelling employer proposition including a positive approach to flexible working, significant investment in staff wellbeing and development, a very generous pension scheme and annual leave allowance, and access to campus facilities. There is also relocation support available for individuals seeking to relocate to the region to take up the position.
