Summary My client is a post 16 training provider offering a range of qualifications and training programmes to 16-19 year olds and up to 24. They are looking for a Learner Mentor who will provide learners with pastoral support. Job Purpose All Teaching Staff have a pastoral role in their everyday dealings with learners. The Learning Mentor has a specific role in pastoral support. The role of the Learning Mentor is to challenge learners on their progress and attendance balanced with providingclear advice and support to ensure learners get the best from their time at the training provider. This will also include sign-posting learners to the most appropriate sources of help and guidance.

The Learning Mentor will be able to motivate and energise young people, deliver a planned enrichment programme, agree motivational targets and produce learner progress reviews. You will also be responsible for initiating, monitoring and overseeing learners’progression routes. Working within the existing tutor team and with the support and guidance of management you will provide support, guidance and encouragement to learners in your care. The Learning Mentor has a specific role within the existing tutor teamfor the pastoral support of their Study Programme learners. The purpose of enrichment and tutorials is to provide individualised support, encouragement and challenge so that the learners maximise their potential.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Programme Management - manage learners’ plans so that they successful achieve all components and progress in a timely manner.
  • Caseload Management - All 'at risk learners’ to be managed effectively from day one to ensure they attend and progress.
  • All learners undertake work placement where appropriate.
  • Contribute towards the planning and delivery of the Induction programme.
  • Agree individual learning plans that encompass all the elements of a meaningful Study Programme in conjunction with the learner and other tutors.
  • Identify and report any learners who have Safeguarding concerns in line with company Safeguarding.
  • Develop an effective and supportive partnership with parents/carers/support agencies by regular and appropriate contact/meetings with them.
  • Deal promptly and appropriately with concerns and referrals in relation to individual learner progress.
  • Monitor the action plans/targets agreed with learners during the review sessions.
  • Refer learners to other agencies where appropriate in consultation with other tutors/management e.g. CAMHS, Supported Housing, Social Services etc.
  • Deal promptly with complaints raised by learners and, where necessary, refer them to the next stage.
  • Develop learners work related skills.
  • Deliver the tutorial and enrichment programme to a group of allocated learners.
  • Be pro-active in continuously updating own skills and knowledge and identify any training and development needs.
  • Arrange visits with external agencies/support groups that will further enhance and develop learners’ personal and social skills.
  • To celebrate learner achievement and promote a positive culture at all times.
  • Develop a bank of employers that will support learners to undertake placements.
  • Proactively undertake a variety of employer engagement activities including, field sales, telesales and face-to-face meetings in order to match learners to suitable employers committed to providing high quality work experience and jobs.
  • To commit to company quality systems and regular reviews of performance.

Qualifications :

  • Teaching Qualification Minimum Level 3 or willing to work towards
  • English and Maths GCSE grade C/4 or Functional Skills Level 2
  • IAG level 3 or willing to work towards
  • Safeguarding Level 2

Experience and Competencies

  • Experience of working with 16-19 year olds in an educational setting
  • SMART target setting to ensure learners achieve their potential
  • Understanding of ESFA Study Programme requirements
  • Knowledge of DFE Safeguarding and Prevent Guidance and requirements
  • Delivery of effective CEIAG
  • Understanding of initial and diagnostic process and how to use this to inform learners ILP’s
  • Experience of delivering tutorial/enrichment sessions to groups of young people
  • Experience of working with SEND and disadvantaged young people
  • Knowledge of Further Education and Skills Ofsted requirements
  • Employer Engagement experience
  • Communication: all aspects, including listening, giving constructive feedback and setting targets
  • Ability to encourage, inspire and motivate learners through excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Building rapport with learners. Effective communication on a one to one basis, small group or large group setting
  • Organisational skills and ensuring all paperwork is completed in a timely manner and caseloads are managed
  • Team working: work closely with other tutors to ensure effective information sharing and the necessary support is provided to all learners
  • Provide an outstanding Learner Experience
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as require
  • Full driving license, own vehicle and business insurance

The role is 37 hours per week, Monday to Thursday, 8.30am - 4.30pm, Friday, 8.30am - 4pm.
